Apricots
The Apricot is a species of Prunus (P armeniaca)classified with the plum in the subgenus Prunus. The Apricot was first cultivated in China in about 3000 BC.
Mascot: Our earliest apricot. The red blush on this apricot looks spectacular against the rocky hillside. Picked in late December through to early January.
Clutha Sun: One of the earliest of the Clutha series developed by Hort Research. Like Dunstan and Sundrop it is harvested from early to third week in January in a traditional year.
Dunstan: Tasty!
Sundrop: Very bright apricot with a clear skin.
Clutha Gold: Another of the Clutha series, this apricot has become an industry standard. Tastes well and travels well. Harvested mid January to mid February.
Vulcan: Susceptible to frosts at bloom but a large apricot harvested at the same timing as Clutha Gold.
Alex: A good size of apricot harvested late January to mid February.
Clutha Fire:
Clutha Star: Tastes well and travels well. Matures later than Clutha Gold
Genevieve: This variety is the first commercial variety of the Nevis series bred in Central Otago by John McLaren and marketing by Le Fresh International Ltd. Matures late February, eats well.
